SUMMARY:Lecture Me! Resources for Survival in Black Women's Writing
DESCRIPTION:“Poetry is Not a Luxury”: Resources for Survival in Black Women’s Writing with Professor Anna Thomas from the Department of English & Drama \nIn this talk\, Professor Anna Thomas will explore how Black women writers have turned to poetry to navigate both chronic and critical difficulties in life. \nWith a particular focus on Audre Lorde\, whose essay ‘Poetry is Not a Luxury’ inspires the title of this talk\, Professor Thomas will share how poetry enables the exploration of the self and the other\, the individual and society\, and between ‘feeling\,’ and ‘reason.’ \nLearn how close reading – a methodology for critically engaging texts central to literary studies – can attune us to ever-expanding meaning\, can reward re-reading\, and can help us navigate our own everyday conditions of life. \nCan’t attend the program in person? Attend via live stream. A link will be sent to all registrants before the program. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Y’all Don’t Wanna Hear Me (You Just Wanna Dance)
DESCRIPTION:Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste\, Y’all Don’t Wanna Hear Me (You Just Wanna Dance) performed at Wesleyan University\, Middletown\, CT\, 2023. \n  \n\n\n\nProgram Details\nPerformance: Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste\, Y’all Don’t Wanna Hear Me (You Just Wanna Dance)\nDate: February 6\, 2025\, 12-2pm\nLocation: walking route on UTM campus concluding at CCT Atrium\nPresenters: The Blackwood and Black @ UTM \nRegister at eventbrite.ca to reserve a spot. \nIn early February 2025\, The Blackwood and Black @ UTM will present Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste’s performance Y’all Don’t Wanna Hear Me (You Just Wanna Dance) on UTM campus\, followed by a discussion with the artist and an invited contributor. \n\n\n\nIn Y’all Don’t Wanna Hear Me (You Just Wanna Dance)\, Toussaint-Baptiste uses a Long-Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) against its intended purpose of crowd dispersal\, alternatively presenting it as a technology that might unite and even guide a crowd through sound. Over the course of the device’s battery life\, the artist plays music through the device\, using its built-in microphone to speak about his artistic practice\, recite facts about the device’s history\, and otherwise uses the technology to bring public joy. The performance culminates with participants dancing the “Cha Cha Slide” together\, with the dance’s instructions (“slide to the left / slide to the right…”) guided by the directional sound of the speaker. \nY’all Don’t Wanna Hear Me […] continues Toussaint-Baptiste’s interest in the embodied effects of sound\, particularly as they relate to Black experience. By reappropriating the LRAD speaker through performance\, Toussaint-Baptiste creates an opportunity to gather through Black music\, conversation\, and dance. \nPlease note: the LRAD speaker produces localized\, directional sound at a moderate volume. The artist uses it for audio playback and voice amplification only\, and does not use its crowd dispersal effects. \nThis event is presented in the context of The Art Gallery Problem (January 8 – March 5\, 2025)\, a group exhibition at The Blackwood taking place in both galleries and public sites on campus\, where Toussaint-Baptiste will present a related artwork.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Finish Line: Exploring Black Canadian Sport Histories
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education (KPE) cordially invites all staff and faculty to a special lecture in celebration of Black History Month\, presented in partnership with the Department of History. \nMany histories of sport are limited to celebrating successful figures of the past\, which is certainly uplifting. But they often fail to unpack why true progress remains elusive within sport and beyond\, despite such triumphs. \nJoin us on February 6 for a special lecture by eminent Black sports scholar Ornella Nzindukiyimana\, exploring what it means to be a Black athlete in Canada today and the pivotal role of sport in our culture as both a platform for struggle and liberation. \nThe lecture will be followed by a moderated Q & A session and a social reception\, with complimentary refreshments from The Peoples Caribbean Dutchpot. \nJoin us in community for an evening of reflection and imagination\, as we look beyond the finish line and examine the impact that erasure of Black histories can have on possibilities for visioning Black futures. \nRegister to attend Beyond the Finish Line: Exploring Black Canadian Sport Histories.
